The Human Needs Index
A timely, multidimensional view of poverty-related need

The Salvation Army and Indiana University’s Lilly Family School of Philanthropy have released a new tool that provides regional and national information on basic human needs in low-income areas. The Human Needs Index uses data from 7,500 Salvation Army locations across the US. It shows nonprofits where support is needed the most.

Official national poverty data have long been calculated using a single dimension: income. At best, income statistics provide only a hazy picture of the actual conditions facing the hungry, the homeless, the unemployed, and the underemployed.

Nonprofit Performance Management
Using Data to Measure and Improve Programs

As the nonprofit world adopts an increasingly data-driven model, the expectation is that more and more nonprofits will embrace the same approach. Will yours be ready? The better question is, what opportunities to improve your program activities and communications are you missing out on now?

The Reality of Measuring Human Service Programs
Results of a Survey

Nonprofits hoping to improve their programs’ services or reach must first understand their own effectiveness. Measurable numbers—how many meals served at a soup kitchen, how many students in a mentoring program graduate high school, what percentage of the target population does not have access to affordable housing—are critical data that can help organizations identify where they can improve their programs.

Getting Started With Data-Driven Decision Making
A Workbook

Could you use more help thinking through how to use data to help your organization make decisions? If so, you’re not alone. NTEN’s recent report on how nonprofits are using data showed that although some organizations are relying heavily on data, a number were doing very little to actually measure their work or use the data to inform other decisions.

Self Assessment and Evaluation of Outcomes
A collection of valuable resources from the National Council of Nonprofits

Organizations that are serious about their theory of change engage in regular self-assessment and evaluation of outcomes. The results of measuring outcomes can be shared with stakeholders to illustrate the impact of an organization’s programs and activities, and to demonstrate the difference the organization is making in its community and in peoples’ lives. Seeing the difference an organization is making on paper, in video, through testimonials — is powerful. To be successful a nonprofit must embrace a culture that supports outcomes thinking.
